Southport, NC
Southport is a city within Brunswick County between North Myrtle Beach and Wilmington near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Known for its quaint downtown fixture of historic architecture and vibrant use of color, Southport is very popular for filming television shows and movies.
Dating back to the early 1500s, the Southport area was explored by Spanish explorers who encountered the new North American continent. It wasn't until the 18th century when British colonialists settled along this North Carolina coast only to be attacked by pirates and Spanish attackers. To mitigate future attacks, a fort was created by the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and through war and raids, the fort eventually became Johnston's Fort in 1745. The town of Southport, which was formerly known as Smithville, was eventually built around Fort Johnston. In 1887, Smithville was renamed Southport in an effort to promote the town as an important shipping transportation hub.
